Acropolis of Lindos – A Place Worth Seeing in Rhodes Island, Greece

Dedicated to goddess Athena, the Acropolis of Lindos is a sanctuary of the 4th century BC located on Rhodes Island. It is a famous site on Rhodes Island and is visited by many tourists during Rhodes Holidays. People approach this site with the help of Lindos taxi (Donkeys) or on foot.

History:

According to traditional views the religious group that worshiped goddess Athena Lindia was pre-Hellenic but this is not supported by some findings. This site dates back to the 9th century.

1. Theatre:

The Theatre near the Acropolis of Lindos is situated below the Athena Temple on the south-western side of the hill. 4. Boukopion:

You will find in the north-east of Acropolis, a place of sacrifices called Boukopion. One can find about thirty eight writings on rocks that help recognizing the place.

5. The Archokrateion:

A large number of cemeteries can be seen around the Acropolis. One of the important funerary monuments is the Archokrateion. An amazing rock engraved tomb is located in the surroundings of Kampana at Krana and hilly western part of Acropolis.

The exterior part of Archokrateion is divided into two stories. On the upper part there are floor pillars alternate with blind openings while on the ground floor there are half columns that support an architrave with triglyphs and metopes.

On the ground floor there are funerary religious structures having the name inscribed on the bases. The inner passage will take you to the place of burial rituals. There are about nineteen graves cut into the chamber walls. The inner portion of the hall carries pillars bartering with the panels of plaster.
