The History of the Fortress:

This protective tower was later turned into a small fortress after the first siege of Rhodes. A bastion was constructed around the tower by Grand Master d’Aubusson turning it into a small fortress. There is a small chapel found in the fortress, from which it got its name.

Historical Significance:

Fortress of Saint Nicholas was built as an effective defence measure for the Rhodes Island against its attackers. The Turkish attacks on the island from time to time were made ineffective by the fortress.
Saint Nicholas Fort of 15th century, found on waterfront of Mandraki harbour played a key role in defence and guard of Rhodes against the foreign attacks. The fortess in the defence of Rhodos played the key role in the sieges of 1480 and 1522-23.
